Scheduled scans occur at a scheduled time of the day, week, or month. Scheduled scans are useful for scanning large numbers of computer files when you are away from your desk. Symantec AntiVirus version 10 adds the ability to perform Quick Scans. Quick Scans will scan for virus and spyware programs running in memory. They take a much shorter time to run. Full Scans should still be run on a regular basis as well.

For example, you could:

Schedule a scan to occur once a day at 11:00 a.m. before the Server backup starts at 12 noon.
Schedule a scan to occur once a week when you are at a staff meeting.
Schedule a scan to occur on day 26 of each month.

Symantec AntiVirus makes it very easy to schedule/edit a scan your hard drive. This How To gives you the steps.
